Endless Blog Ideas for Photographers to Attract Ideal Clients
Blogging is one of the best ways to sustainably market your photography business. In this guide, I’ll walk you through blog ideas for photographers that attract dream clients and build your authority for years to come. It's the perfect place to showcase your work, be a helpful resource, and nurture potential clients. When a client finds you through Google, not only are you providing exactly what they're looking for, but you’re also showing your photography style and personality, leading to aligned inquiries! Let’s go over the steps I use to create endless blog ideas for photographers.
Create Content Categories
First, we need to take a look at your business goals and who you serve. Do you want to book more weddings in a specific city or elopements in dream locations? Or book engagement sessions that turn into wedding clients? From there, create content categories for your blogs. It’s helpful to have these categories on your website as well, so users can sort through the topics that are most relevant to them.
Some common categories are:
Weddings
Elopements
Engagements
Couples
Maternity
Family
Photographers (helpful if you offer digital products or mentorships)
Types of Blogs Ideas for Photographers
When it comes to blog ideas for photographers, there are two blog types I recommend for being a helpful resource and ranking on Google, and that's session blogs and educational blogs.
SESSION BLOGS
Session blogs are how they sound: blogging about previous clients. But don’t just dump your photos in the post and consider it done. Tell the story of the special day. What did you love capturing the most? What unique details can you share? What made the location so perfect? Use storytelling to show your personality and tell potential clients what their session could look like for them. An example of this could be "Romantic Wedding Details at [Venue].”
EDUCATIONAL BLOGS
Educational blogs are any helpful topics that your ideal clients are searching for. For endless blog ideas here, think about what questions you often get asked by your clients or on social media. For example, “What to Wear for Engagement Photos” would be helpful if you find your clients stressed about figuring out what to wear. It’s also something that would be searched on Google!
Keyword Strategy
When it comes to creating a keyword strategy, consider what traffic will help you reach your goals and attract aligned clients. For photographers I work with, we use a combination of location-based and topic keywords. (Ubersuggest is the keyword research tool I use for my clients.)
LOCATION-BASED KEYWORDS
When choosing location-based keywords, think about your favorite venues to photograph at and use the venue as your focus keyword! Or if you’d love more elopements in Europe, write about previous sessions there or educational topics like “How to Elope in Europe.”
TOPIC KEYWORDS
For topic keywords, focus on your photography style. Is it documentary or editorial? What are the vibes of your clients? Do you capture more luxury weddings or intimate celebrations? Also, research what questions your dream clients are searching for so you can answer their questions and build authority. Answer the Public is a free resource to see what users are searching for on Google.
Beyond SEO
And while many blog ideas for photographers are built around SEO, there are other benefits for blogs beyond ranking on Google. Some blog posts will serve the purpose of helping your current clients. For example, while a blog post about “Engagement Photo Locations in [City]” may rank on Google, you can also send it to clients after booking their session with you, going the extra mile to help them through this important season.
