How to Write Pinterest Board Descriptions for SEO and Brand Visibility

Pinterest board descriptions often get overlooked, but they’re actually super important for SEO. When you share pins to a board, Pinterest will use your board description to understand your content, categorize it, and show it to users who are searching for it. That’s why it pains me to see creatives leave board descriptions blank. But not you! I’m sharing how I optimize and write descriptions for my Pinterest management clients (along with the exact prompt I use!).

The Importance of Keywords in Boards

Before we start writing Pinterest board descriptions, we need to do keyword research. Since Pinterest is a search engine (not a social media platform), it uses keywords to understand your content and share it with the right people. I share how to find keywords in my blog post How to Increase Pinterest Traffic in 4 Simple Steps

Once you’ve done your keyword research, you’re ready to create Pinterest boards!

Writing Pinterest Board Titles

To create a board, you first need a board title. It’s best to keep it simple here and use a keyword as the title. Choose a broader, primary keyword so you can get more specific with secondary keywords in the description.

Here are examples of high-performing board titles:

  • Brand Color Palette Ideas

  • Romantic Wedding Photos

  • Healthy Meal Prep Recipes

Writing Pinterest Board Descriptions

Now we can move on to writing our Pinterest board descriptions! Remember those keywords you found? This is where you’ll use them.

Board descriptions are more for the algorithm than for people. We want to tell the algorithm exactly what the pins you’ll share to this board are about. We still need to write in complete sentences, though! You never want to just list keywords. That’s pretty spammy, and Pinterest doesn't like it.

There’s a 500-character limit for descriptions, and we want to use them up! I typically follow this 3-4 sentence structure:

  • Sentence 1: Intro with 1-2 keywords

  • Sentence 2: Keyword-rich sentence with 3-5 keywords

  • Sentence 3: CTA with 1-2 keywords and your URL

Board Description Prompt

Here’s a prompt I follow when writing board descriptions:

This board is all about [board title keyword] and [keyword]! Here you’ll find [keyword],[keyword], [keyword], [keyword], and [keyword]. See more [keyword] and [keyword]at yourwebsite.com!

Here are examples of the prompt in action:

  • This board is all about romantic wedding photos with romantic wedding photo ideas! Here you’ll find inspiration for your romantic wedding photoshoot, romantic wedding photo poses, aesthetic romantic wedding photos, and romantic wedding photography poses. See more romantic wedding photography and romantic wedding ideas at yourwebsite.com!

  • In this board, you’ll find brand color palette ideas and brand color palette inspiration for creative entrepreneurs! Take a look at luxury brand color palettes, brand color palette mood boards, neutral brand color palettes, and feminine brand color palettes. Helpful Tips for Boards

Take a look at all the content you have and create boards centered around those topics. Don’t just create one board! Create several boards for each of your content categories. This gives you a greater opportunity for SEO and allows you to get really specific with your keywords.

If you’re a brand designer, don’t just create one board called “Brand Design.” Create specific boards about color palettes, logos, brand identities, etc.

The same goes for wedding photographers. Create several boards about weddings based on your photography style and content. Some topic examples are romantic wedding photos, documentary-style wedding photos, intimate wedding ideas, location-based venues, etc.
